Vietnamese students majoring in International Information Technology are getting increasingly confident in using English when studying with foreign students

Today, the globalization trend has opened up great opportunities for students to participate in the international labor market after graduating. However, to be able to grasp those great opportunities in addition to professional knowledge, students need to be able to use foreign languages ​​fluently not only in normal communications but also in professional fields. In Vietnam, a situation that is very common today is that many students even after graduating are unable to use foreign languages, especially specialized foreign languages. For students, in order to have good foreign language skills, in addition to their own efforts, their learning environment is also an extremely important factor.

Understanding the importance of foreign languages ​​for post-graduate students, the Institute of International Training – University of Information and Communications Technology was established with the task of building new majors taught in English. , the purpose of creating an “International Environment” to help students not only develop professional knowledge and skills but also develop comprehensive English skills, especially major-specialized English. In that “International Environment”, students will be taught entirely in English, using English study materials. In addition, there will be international students from many countries around the world participating in the program. The International Information Technology Program (International IT) is the first program to be built with such a goal.

During the first enrollment season (Academic Year 2023-2024), the International IT program enrolled 51 students. After more than a month of studying in a completely new environment, International IT students are gradually overcoming initial difficulties in teaching and learning methods, as well as concerns about language barrier. Especially with the participation of international students, Vietnamese students’ ability to use English is improving rapidly.

Of course, there will always be difficulties at first, but quickly changing to adapt and immerse yourself in the new environment is what is really important. And students of the International IT major gradually gain confidence in expressing themselves when giving presentations to foreign students. This presentation is definitely different from your previous presentations. That is to discuss and give your own opinions with foreign friends to have a good presentation in both content and form. Work in groups to gain additional skills such as problem solving, communication and making appropriate decisions. Using English to explain to your group members is an extremely good way to improve this language. There is a saying “Learning goes hand in hand with practice”, which is never wrong. Therefore, not only learning grammar and listening to audio on tapes, but also needing to “realize” and talk with “Western people”. And International IT students overcame their previous fears, surpassing their own limits and getting sweet results.

This is just the beginning, but they have integrated and approached confidently and comfortably. That is a good sign for ICTU in general and international IT students in particular.
